What’s the average day of a plumber like?

Depending on how busy you are and whether you end up working for a contractor or being self-employed, the typical day of a plumber can be varied. If you’re based at a new build housing estate you’ll probably be on site early, maybe from 7.30 in the morning installing new water, gas and sewerage fixtures. The work is varied and can be very well paid.

Once you’ve developed your skills you may chose to become self-employed. Earnings tend to be a lot higher as you work for yourself, although this makes building up a good reputation even more important. People skills are especially important in dealing with customers and understanding what the problem might be. Working self employed will tend to involve lots of smaller jobs such as fixing leaks, installing dishwashers and washing machines, but include much larger jobs such as bathrooms and complete central heating systems.

Although the work can be tough, tasks such as digging holes have become a lot easier with the introduction of technology such as mini diggers and push fit central heating pipes.

You can ultimately be sure of a well paid and interesting career in plumbing.

Why is there such a high demand for plumbers?

Many households don’t have a local plumber in their address book who they can call if they find themselves in a dilemma. It is now very hard to come by an experienced plumber as there is a huge shortage of professional plumbers who have at least 5 years experience. Many of our professional plumbers are choosing to emigrate to Australia causing there to be very few experienced plumbers in the UK.

Our general perception of a plumber is that they can fix a leak, but they are trained to do so much more, from installing boilers, central heating, complete bathrooms and pipe work. The younger generation are now carrying on with further education leading to white-collar jobs and no longer want to get their hands dirty. However with reports of plumbers being paid more than bank managers, the plumbing trade is becoming all the more appealing. Colleges now have a variety of plumbing courses available to suit the demand and with apprenticeships on the rise the trade is proving extremely popular with the younger generation and women. Many are now enrolling on plumbing courses so they can fix minor leaks which are proving extremely cost effective and useful. Trained female plumbers are being welcomed into what was seen as an all male dominated trade. Many households prefer to have a female plumber due to religious reasons or if they are a single female living by themselves.

So for all those who are looking for a profession that is constantly in demand and pays well, plumbing might just be what you are looking for.
